Rink Rat update
The weekend was amazing! We left Thursday morning and got home late Sunday. My little rink rats didn't win, but I really don't think they cared one bit. Between pools, waterslides, pizza, endless parties and sleepovers, it was a great time. It was awesome for me to get to know the parents of the kids I coach in a more social setting instead of from behind the bench. By day we played hockey, ALOT of hockey. The evenings turned into a giant party. 16 kids and numerous siblings racing the halls. overtaking hotel rooms, junk food everywhere and so much laughter.
The evenings belonged to the parents. Once the kids were tucked in, the alcohol and poker surfaced. I didn't sleep much this weekend, but it was all worth the exhaustion I feel today.
The kids ( and parents) had the pleasure of watching coach Sandi almost take the head off one of the competitions coaches. It was during one of our Saturday games and it was a dirty game. One of their players delivered a nasty, and very deliberate two handed cross check. The ref called it, but only called at minor ( 2 mins in the penalty box) . A two-hand cross check is a major and cause for immediate ejection from a game. At the very least, this kid should have sat for 5 in the box and the coach should have pulled him from his line for at least one rotation. He didn't and I blew up. Its infuriating as a coach when you teach your kids ethics and fair play only to have another coach encourage ( by lack of intervention) dirty antics. I am passionate about this sport but I will never want to win so badly that I lose sight of fair play and fun. Needless to say, they found it amusing to watch me throw a tantrum mid game and was dangerously close to being fined for misconduct unbecoming by the ref himself.
and a final observation. Partying with a Doctor and a geneticist is ALOT of fun. -Laughs-
Next come playoffs. I'm pumped.

You? Throw a tantrum? I don't believe it. I'm in utter shock.
I've seen the crappy hockey calls plenty of times as well. A girl punched my kid sister right in the face during a game and only got a minor for roughing.
Of course my sister is 5'10"...she took care of business when the girl came out, decking her on a clean open ice hit at the blue line.
